The stages an invoice moves through
An invoice is a draft until you send it. Once sent it is outstanding until payment is recorded against it, at which point it settles. Partial payments are supported, so an invoice can be part-paid and still show a balance.
Recording a payment
When a customer pays you, record the payment against the invoice so your reports and your outstanding balance stay accurate. If you are using payment links, payments made through the link are recorded for you.
Correcting a sent invoice
A sent invoice is a record, so it is corrected rather than quietly rewritten. Issue a credit note against it to reverse all or part of the amount, then raise a replacement if you need one. That keeps your books consistent and gives your customer a clear trail.
